AutoRev
BuiltFinds mechanical problems in a draft, such as filler adverbs and hedge clusters, and fixes only the safe ones.
Companion to the Writing Workshop. While the Workshop diagnoses, AutoRev fixes β at least the mechanical stuff.
What It Does
Scans writing pieces for fixable issues:
- Filler adverbs β "very", "really", "actually", "just", etc. Suggests removal or stronger replacements ("very cold" β "frigid")
- Hedge clusters β Paragraphs with 3+ hedge words (seems, perhaps, might, sort of)
- Repeated openers β Sentences starting the same way, with specific rewrite suggestions
- That-chains β Sentences with 4+ "that" clauses (threshold raised for philosophical writing)
- Whitespace β Double spaces, formatting inconsistencies
Safety Model
- Safe (auto-applicable) β Whitespace, clear adverb upgrades ("very cold" β "frigid")
- Manual (needs review) β Adverb removals, opener restructuring, hedge reduction
Safe fixes create a backup before applying. Manual fixes are shown as suggestions only.
Design Decisions
- Conservative by default β Most fixes are flagged for review, not auto-applied
- Philosophy-aware β Hedge words like "perhaps" and "might" are kept in essays (intentional epistemic hedging)
- "that" threshold = 4 β Raised from 3 because philosophical argument uses "that"-clauses heavily
- Backups always β Every apply creates a timestamped backup in
